Here we go.

This week’s Torah portion is Pinchas and it includes the story of the five daughters of Tzelofhad. A testament to courage and speaking out for one’s rights.

Tzelofhad had died and his only direct heirs were his daughters who, according to tradition, had no share in his estate. His daughters were named Mahla and No’a, Hogla, Milka and Tirtza. They went to Moses and petitioned him for an inheritance.

The daughters were in a pickle. Left destitute, their marriage prospects were dim because there was no dowry. But there was also the issue of justice involved. Just because they were women, should they not receive their share of the inheritance?
Moses conferred with Hashem and Hashem told Moses to grant the women the inheritance. There was a condition: They had to marry in their tribe so that the inheritance would stay in the tribe.

I admire Mahla and No’a, Hogla, Milka and Tirtza. They had the courage to stand up not just for themselves but for what was right. And they were rewarded for their courage. I can hope that I would be willing to do the same.

And may it be for all of us a blessing.

See you tonight!
Mit vareme grusn,
(With warm regards,)

All my love,
brian.

My Kids and I Found Jewish Joy at a Picnic – Kveller
Antisemitism is having a moment, and I have no idea what to do about it, so I took my children to a food festival called The Great Nosh. My daughter is 7 and my son is 4. They know they are Jewish the way they know they are New Yorkers: It’s just a fact, unremarkable […]

I Found My Jewish Home at the Mah Jongg Table – Kveller
This past Sunday, I attended Kveller’s Jewish Mah Jongg Festival at the Museum of Jewish Heritage in New York City. Even though I don’t live in the Big Apple, I had never been to the museum, and I didn’t yet know the vast majority of people at the event, I felt like I was coming […]
